Errors galore in Inter valuation....
The Board of Intermediate Education’s (BIE) initiative to provide photocopies of answer sheets to students failed to serve the purpose as there is no mechanism to rectify the follies in evaluation found in the answer sheets. The BIE, which charges a hefty amount of Rs 600 per subject for the photocopies, is not giving any opportunity to lodge complaints against errors in them. When a student applies for a photocopy of a particular subject, the BIE re-evaluates the script, awards or deletes marks based on it and sends the photocopy of that script to the student by post. Even if the student found any evaluation error in the photocopy, there is no way he/she can approach the Board and get it rectified. Students and parents said the very purpose of providing photocopies of answer sheets is not served as they have no chance to register complaints against evaluation errors found. Students who had applied for photocopies of their answer scripts were shocked to find that the re-evaluated paper, too, had several errors. The poor standard of evaluation in such a crucial examination can be imagined from the fact that evaluators awarded marks for some answers though they themselves marked them wrong. There were also errors in addition of total marks. In the photocopy of a chemistry answer sheet, the evaluator had awarded two marks for question No. 22. But in the tally script, which is pasted on the answer script, the marks mentioned in the box opposite to the question read ‘zero’.“We are obtaining photocopies by paying Rs 600 per paper. They are just re-valuating the paper and sending the photocopy to us by post. Though we are finding many valuation errors in photocopies, there is no option to lodge complaints on those errors and get them rectified. In these conditions, there is no point in obtaining photocopies by paying hefty amount,” Mr Prashant Rao, a student of New Government College in Secuderabad, said. However, BIE secretary Mr M. Veerabhadraiah defended the Board’s decision of not allowing students to lodge complaints on errors found in photocopies. “We will only re-valuate the paper and send the photocopy. We will examine the answers carefully and lay more focus on those answers where the students were awarded zero marks,” he said.
